Another area where the Firm has many years experience is that of tourism planning and assessment – particularly in sensitive or difficult areas. The issue of the Firm’s involvement in tourism infrastructure such as Resorts and Pools is dealt with elsewhere on this site.
The wider aspects of tourism also form an important part of the Firm’s expertise. Peter James was for many years a member of the PATA Advisory Council and provided expertise throughout the PATA Region on a variety of matters mainly relating to heritage and conservation and the need to take these into account in any tourism project, policy or development. He also taught a course in Heritage Tourism for PATA for several years in both Hawaii and Macau.
Peter led Task Forces on Tourism Studies to places such as The Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand, Hong Kong, The Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania and Mt Morgan in Queensland and has also advised for PATA in Singapore and Sri Lanka. The Firm has also carried out studies with a tourism emphasis in Gordonvale, Laura, Cooktown and Cardstone.
On a more local level a heritage and tourism study was carried out for CYPLUS (Cape York Peninsula Land Use Study) of the whole of the Cape York land mass and for GBRMPA (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority) the islands and waters to the East of Cape York. These studies, for the first time, identified and provided protective measures, for many places not previously recognised as having tourism potential.
Peter also prepared the Report and Documentation which led to the formation of the Far North Queensland Bed and Breakfast Association.
