Heritage

The Firm has always had a deep interest and involvement in heritage issues – cultural, Aboriginal and natural but with a major emphasis on the cultural heritage aspects. Peter James who is responsible for this aspect of the Firm’s work, was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2001 for his services to the development of legislation and the improvement of management of heritage places in Australia.

Peter was also the inaugural Chair of the Tasmanian Heritage Council from 1997 to 2006, has served on numerous Ministerial Committees in Australia advising various Governments including the Commonwealth Government on a range of Heritage issues, has acted as Consultant to the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors and chaired the Commonwealth’s Federation Fund Restoration for the restoration of the major Tasmanian property Clarendon.

Peter has taught Heritage Law at the University of Tasmania for several years, Tropical Heritage Law at James Cook University and has guest lectured at many Universities within and without Australia.

The Firm has also advised every Australian Government on heritage issues as well as providing advice in New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Fiji and Tonga.
