This is another area where the Firm has considerable expertise – from the local and regional level to the State and National arenas. Peter James was responsible, as Executive Director, for many years for the compilation of the National Trust in New South Wales Register of Places and he complied, organised and ran the program to compile a list of places in Tasmania to form the basis of the Tasmanian section of the Register of the National Estate. He was also, as Chair of the Tasmanian Heritage Council, responsible for the over sighting of the Tasmanian Heritage Register which, by the time he retired had over 5,500 places assessed and registered within a 7 year period.
The Firm and Peter have also been responsible for the assessment of places from Cape York (having compiled an Inventory of Cultural Heritage Places for the Cape York Peninsula Land Use Study and (in the maritime areas) the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority) to Tasman Peninsula in southern Tasmania as well as many places in other parts of Australia.
Peter James chaired a Pacific Area Travel Association (PATA) Task Force to Hong Kong in 1999 which was appointed by the then Hong Kong Tourism Authority to compile a list of and to assess the cultural heritage places in Hong Kong and the New Territories. He was also the author of the PATA Handbook on Inventories, a publication designed to assist countries in the Pacific and Asian area which did not have any register of their cultural assets.
